MENTOR PROGRAM

You know what its like when you begin a new year of classes... new teachers, new books, new information, lots of confusion, well the upper classmen have all been there and we are still experiencing some of it. It would have been so helpful if we had someone to go to for advice in this field of study when we were underclassmen. So, a mentor program was suggested to give you that opportunity if you need it. So, if you are interested in being a mentor for the underclassmen or if you want a mentor's assistance please let the officers know. The following people have shown interest in the program. We have tons of seniors and some juniors signed up but unfortunately we only have a couple of freshman interested.
Freshmen- Abby Warner, Lacie Deeds
Sophomore-
Junior-Kelly Adkins, Jaime Basham
Senior-Jenny Brown, Kara Rollins, Allison Spadero, Abbye Epperhart, Kristen McGrath, Kristin Boggess, Amanda Caines, Nikki Blankenship, Julie Compton, Kelly Dew, Kristel Tupes, Ashley Stover, Rachel Payne, Cindy Reid, Cindy Ezell

We need some excited interest to get this thing going soon!

Meeting Minutes from September 9, 2003

At this meeting we briefly went over the information on dues and the point system. Dues for this semester or year are due in by the last day of September.

The polo shirt samples are available to be tried on in Ms. McNealy's office. They are green and white and styles are available for both men and women (check preference on order form). Order forms are also available in the clinic library. If you can't pay now you can go ahead and order the shirt. Then when they come in you have to pay to receive your shirt. We need to get the first orders out by the end of this week or next week. Preferrably ASAP!

Entertainment Books- Need order forms to be turned in by 9-16-03. You can talk to Rachel Payne if you need an extension. It takes four weeks for the books to come in.

We are going to send around a survey for the proposed formal. It will include questions such as: Would you attend? How far do you want to go for this formal? How much do you want to spend on the formal?

A mentor program was suggested and therefore we are developing a mentor sign-up sheet for anyone interested. This is mainly for the underclassmen coming into the program. We know how hard it is to begin this program and if those coming up in it could get some tips and advice from the older students we believe it would really help. So, if you are interested sign up. We also discussed a buddy outing to meet each other.

National NSSLHA- $45 a year-get 2 years in NSSLHA plus membership in National NSSLHA you get a reduction in ASHA fees. You also will receive journals.

Look for updates on bulletin board

Flu shots-pay attention to the dates and sign up if you can work the sign in table.

Asked for any ideas...none were provided.
CLOSE OF THE MEETING...until next time.

Polo Shirts On Sale Now!

Green or white which will you choose? If you can't decide now you have a couple weeks. We have already provided order forms in the clinic library but we understand that after buying books and well... all that other stuff that college kids need...you're probably broke. Therefore, we have decided to have a running order for the next several weeks. The t-shirts are $20 a piece and they show the Marshall "M" with Speech and Hearing Center embroidered beneath the collar on the left side. The shirts and khaki pants may become the dress code in the clinic so don't miss out on your chance to get one!

What is the Point System?

Because we had such great success last year with membership, we are trying the point system again! It works really well & it gives everyone an opportunity to participate!

A total of 5 points are needed in order to be considered an Active member.

Here's the point system break down:

2 meeting points- obtained by attending
meetings. If your schedule conflicts
with the meeting times, see an officer &
we will work something out.

2 activity points- Get these by
participating in any event that we
have,like helping out with fundraising.

1 miscellaneous point- This is the easy
one. Just attend an extra meeting or
activity & you get a point!

To find out how many points you have check out <a href="http://munsslha.antville.org/topics/Points" Points

DUES, DUES, DUES

How much are dues?
At Marshall, the cost is $5 per semester or a total of $10 per year.

If you want to join the national chapter, the cost is $45. Check out the benefits of joining nationally.

Who do I give my money to?
Any officer can take dues. A check can also be left in an envelope in an officer's box, but NOT cash.

When is the deadline for dues?
The deadline for dues for the Fall 2003 semester has not been set. To pay, contact Cindy Reid, Mrs. McNealy, or another officer.

Did I pay my dues?
Can't remember if you paid your dues? Find out at Dues.

What are we all about?
What is NSSLHA?

NSSLHA is an acronym that stands for:
National Student Speech Language & Hearing
Association

Now that you know what NSSLHA stands for, what is it really all about?
This organization is made up of college students majoring in speech-language pathology and audiology. There are chapters at many universities. This is the Marshall University chapter. Click here for more information on the national chapter of NSSLHA.

So, how do you join?
The major requirement to join the MU chapter is that you have to be a CD major at Marshall University. You can be in undergraduate or graduate school. For more information about joining NSSLHA at Marshall or the national chapter, see one of the officers. This link has also been provided to give you more information about joining the national chapter.

Why should you join?

To learn more about the professions.

To become more aware of the
issues that Speech Pathologists &
Audiologists are facing.

To get to know your classmates better.

To get more involved in the community
& at Marshall.
